When sponsorship really matters.
I spent this evening with Kevin and his grandparents. We had a great time and Kevin’s grandfather (age 91) shared with me his newly acquired cooking skills that he has gained during lockdown. He can now cook meals for dinner using firewood.
Kevin is one of our Comfort Babies but his story is not altogether a happy one.
Later on in the evening, Sarah, Kevin’s grandmother, with tears in her eyes, told me the sad story of the death of her daughter Janet. Kevin’s mother had passed away because of poverty. She had become sick and was not able to afford to go to the hospital for treatment and she eventually died.
Tragically, Janet had come to me in April 2017 asking for help. We already had a waiting list of unsponsored babies and I’d asked her to come back when those had been sponsored. Unfortunately within a short period of time, we heard from the family that Janet had passed away due to sickness. Esperance (from the Comfort Babies team) and I were very shocked and saddened.
Later, thankfully, a sponsor was found for the baby and he has turned into a great boy who loves grandparents. He calls me Papa and whenever I visit he tells the other kids in the area that Papa has arrived. He loves being with other children.
Sarah is very thankful that we have been able to help Kevin and she thinks that his mother, Janet, would be proud of her boy now
This evening has really highlighted to me the importance of sponsorship. This family depends on Comfort Babies for the food they eat. They can now be treated when they are sick as their national medical insurances are fully covered by Comfort Rwanda and they are grateful to some local people who provided a house for them to live in for free.
