Building to fulfil regulation requirements.
Up until recently the land surrounding the Ihumure Technical and Vocational Education & Training centre and the Living Church has been vulnerable because it has not been fully surrounded by a fence/wall, in the past some school materials have been stolen. The Ministry of Education through the Workforce Development Authority carried out an inspection and recommended that a fence should be erected and if it wasn’t installed the school would not be allowed to reopen. The leaders decided to take the opportunity of COVID-19 to build the fence. Some of the students from the ITVET were able to build a beautiful wall and fence along the road leading to the entrance of the ITVET/Living Church site and beyond to the neighbouring land. The work involved excavating the foundation, building the foundation with stones, building a wall with Ruliba bricks and creating a finishing on the wall and foundation. The railings are still to be installed.
They also managed to complete the retaining wall from where they had left off previously, by building an area 3.5 m tall and 60 m wide. A trench along the top of this wall takes rain water, which in the past would flow down the slope and affect the school, away to a drain.
Further work included the excavation of an area of land which will accommodate the ground floor of a hostel.
The ground adjacent to the main road was often quite wet so work has been carried out to dry the area, raise the height of the land by moving soil and then levelling and compacting it. The ground is now very good and will be used by the students for sports and events when they are allowed to return for study.
Further requirements from the Ministry of Education were for a room specifically for the girls and an area for hand washing because of Covid-19. A well has also been dug to provide water for cleaning, this will reduce the water costs particularly as more water will be required for the extra hand washing for every student and church member.
