From a report by Comfort Congo
Thanks to the generosity of Comfort International supporters support has arrived.
The Situation
Following the eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano on the evening of the 22 May and the subsequent significant and frequent earth tremors the inhabitants of much of Goma were ordered to evacuate. Memories of the destructive nature of this particular volcano when it erupted previously in 2002 caused many to flee Goma in fear and at speed leaving their belongings, food, livestock and money behind. With the main water pipe from the reservoir damaged, rainwater contaminated by the volcanic gases and the influx of thousands of people, both clean water and food were in short supply at Sake (the town to which people from many areas of Goma were advised to flee).
Food Relief Arrives
Comfort Congo called Comfort International for emergency help. The response from our supporters to the Emergency Appeal for D.R.Congo has been second to none and has almost certainly saved lives! Funds were sent out and food and emergency medicines purchased. Initial distributions took place at Sake and the Comfort Congo Health Post at Kyezye between 2-4 June with further distributions scheduled to take place until they are no longer required. Those receiving aid include individuals and families from Comfort Babies Congo, Children of Liberty, Heshima, Rape Survivors, Teachers & Principal Teachers from Kyezye, Mubula, Kisima and Kambize Schools and School Coordinators and other vulnerable displaced people – approximately 1300 so far – all are extremely grateful.

“We are so grateful for all that Comfort Congo has done. That you came to see us that first time and you were concerned about us and you came back today with food. You guys you might think that it is small, but it is not small. We are so grateful for all that you did. May the Lord bless you. When we first came here to Sake we did what we could with the small amount that we had. I wish blessing on Comfort Congo because we did not have a place but Comfort Congo took us and they brought us here and we are so grateful. May God bless you thank you so much, thank you so much.”
