Nyabisindu Street Kids Rescue Project Update

Introduction

The Nyabisindu Project continues to be a place of transformation, hope, and restoration for vulnerable children. Through the generous support of sponsors and the strong commitment of our team, children who were once living on the streets, in swamps, and in unsafe conditions are now living in dignity, safety, and purpose.

In 2025, the project focused on holistic child development through spiritual growth, health and nutrition support, education, family reintegration, and preparation for independent living. This update, which has been prepared by our partners in the project, Comfort Rwanda, highlights the impact achieved, the voices of the children, and the milestones that demonstrate how lives are being transformed.

Spiritual Growth

Spiritual development remains a central pillar of the Nyabisindu Project. Children regularly gather to study the Bible, pray together, worship, and encourage one another in faith. These gatherings have strengthened their confidence, discipline, and commitment to God.

Testimonies

Divine:

“I love dancing for the Lord and sharing the Word of God with others. I feel spiritually strong and committed to Jesus in everything I do.”

Keza:

“I am happy whenever I share the Word of God with other children at school, at home, and at the project. During our gatherings we do many activities and it feels good to come together every Saturday. The verse I recently shared was Psalm 1:1–6, which reminds us to stay connected to God and to live according to His ways.”

Achievement

Through the weekend programmes, children have grown spiritually and developed more disciplined, responsible, and positive lives.

Health and Nutrition Support

Health and nutrition support plays a vital role in children’s development and general wellbeing. All children receive timely medical care and nutritional support whenever they are unwell, ensuring quick recovery and continued stability. There is zero malnutrition among the children supported by the project.

Testimonies

Diane:

“I suffered from malaria, but getting health support regularly and immediately helped me to remain healthy and focused.”

Isimbi:

“Malaria and typhoid were the toughest moments I experienced this year, but getting medical support on time and accessing nutritious food helped me recover quickly. Having national health insurance has been one of the best things in my life.”

Mukamana:

“I was diagnosed with malaria, but it was not too bad because of the support and nutritious meals that helped me stay strong.”

Education Support

Education remains a powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty. In 2025, all children in the Nyabisindu Project accessed both formal and informal education. All of the 36 children on the project received education support:

  • Primary school: 15 students
  • Secondary school: 8 students
  • TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training): 13 students

Through school fees, scholastic materials, uniforms, and close monitoring, children are enabled to focus fully on their studies and build a strong foundation for their future.

Stories

Divine:

“70%, 5th position. Being supported enabled me to focus and work hard because I lack nothing at school.”

Ruth:

“78.5%, 5th position. Being part of the project helped me feel cared for and gave me purpose in life. My mother abandoned me and life was very hard, but now things are improving and I am doing my best to keep increasing my performance.”

Family Reintegration and House Rent Support

Family reintegration is a key programme at Nyabisindu. Most children are now living with their biological families after successful tracing and reintegration. Only two children remain in foster care, where the project mother provides full care and protection.

House rent support ensures stability and safety for vulnerable families and encourages strong family unity.

Testimonies

Manzi:

“We receive monthly house rent support at home and we are happy because we have no worries about our accommodation.”

Keza:

“Accessing everything I need helps a lot and I never worry because I feel like I have my own home that cares for me. Thank you to the project mother who provides everything we need for daily survival.”

Simbi:

“Since I was rescued from the street, I have lived with the project mother. Even though I am now graduating and moving to live with my biological family, I feel happy and strong. My life has been built on a strong foundation.”

Graduates

In 2025 and previous years, many children were prepared for independence. By 2025, a total of 18 children were confirmed as graduates, having been successfully reintegrated into families or prepared for self-reliant living.

This success reflects the continuous commitment of sponsors who have transformed lives and enabled children to smile, hope, and live independently.

New Project Members

In 2025, eight (8) new children joined the Nyabisindu Project. We are grateful that all of them received sponsors quickly, allowing them to immediately experience love, care, and stability.

Effectiveness of the Project

Since the establishment of the Nyabisindu Project, the number of street children in the area has reduced significantly:

  • Children who were once living in swamps have been fully rescued.
  • There are now no children living in swamps in the Nyabisindu area.
  • Walking around the community, very few street children are now seen.

This achievement is the result of strong collaboration between the project, the community, and generous sponsors.

Drug-Free Achievement

When children were first rescued from the streets in Nyabisindu, drug use was a serious concern. Through consistent care, counselling, love, and guidance, children have transformed their lives.

Today, 100% of children in the project are drug-free.

They have shown strong commitment to their future and determination to remove all barriers that once limited their dreams.

Impact of Comfort International Visits

The visits from Comfort International during the summer of 2025 had a significant and lasting impact on the Nyabisindu Project. It was a wonderful year in which many groups visited and shared joyful moments with the children through games, testimonies, football, singing together, and storytelling. The children treasured every moment spent with the visitors and felt deeply encouraged, valued, and supported. These visits strengthened their sense of connection and belonging, reminding them that they are part of a wider, caring global family. Since the project began, the children have developed a strong bond with the visiting teams and always look forward to their arrival. They see these visits as a meaningful way of maintaining relationships and celebrating the unity and friendship that exist between them.

Support Following House Demolitions

During the year, some families’ houses were demolished by the government due to poor living conditions and unsafe construction. As a result, several families were relocated. Comfort Rwanda continued to stand with these families by providing ongoing support, including accommodation and transport. This ensured that children remained safe and that their connection to the project was not disrupted. Despite these challenges, children were still able to come together for activities and support sessions, maintaining stability, continuity, and a strong sense of community.

Saturday Gatherings

Every Saturday, children come together for a special time of fellowship, Bible study, life skills training, and sharing their personal experiences. These gatherings create a safe and supportive environment where children can express themselves freely, encourage one another, and receive guidance from the Comfort Rwanda team. The children have shared that the Saturday gatherings make them feel supported and valued, as they are able to open their hearts and also spend personal time with Comfort Rwanda staff and project officers.

On these days, children arrive at the meeting place in the morning and begin with prayer and sharing the Word of God. They then take part in different activities, including cooking meals together for lunch, sharing stories, and strengthening their friendships. When it is examination time, special focus is given to revision and academic support, with the team helping children to prepare well.

The children choose the food they would like to cook, go to the shops together to buy ingredients, and the team ensures that all food selected is healthy and nutritious. This helps them learn responsibility, teamwork, and good nutrition.

After lunch, children break into small groups where they talk more deeply about their lives, challenges, and progress. They also have time to ask questions and receive advice from the project team. These small group discussions strengthen relationships, build confidence, and help children feel heard and understood.
