Introduction
The Comfort Burundi Project continues to support vulnerable children and families through holistic, child-centred interventions aimed at improving wellbeing, resilience, and long-term independence. Operating in the Kamenge and Nyabunyegeri communities, the project focuses on health and nutrition, education, economic empowerment, and emotional support through sponsor relationships. We recieved the following in a report compiled by David Gasana, who oversees the work in Burundi.
Health and Nutrition Support
During the year, several children fell ill and received timely medical attention through the project. Children were taken to recognised health facilities, where they received appropriate diagnosis, treatment, follow-up care, and nutritional support to ensure full recovery.
As part of the nutrition programme, food assistance was provided to 39 families in the Kamenge and Nyabunyegeri communities. This support significantly improved household food security and contributed to the overall wellbeing of children and their families.
- Egide: “When I fell sick with malaria and typhoid, the project took me to the hospital where I received treatment. After a few days, I recovered fully.”
- Jean Paul: “I really appreciate how I was cared for when I fell sick with a stomach ache and an intestinal infection. I am now in good health.”
- Bryan: “I fell sick with a stomach ache and an infection. I am thankful to the project for supporting me to go to the hospital and receive treatment.”
Education Support
Education remains a core pillar of the Burundi Project, playing a critical role in breaking the cycle of poverty and preparing children for independent and productive lives.
In 2025, children were supported through both formal and informal education pathways:
- 28 children received education support:
- 24 in primary school
- 4 in secondary school
- 3 children on the project are still below school-going age
In addition to covering school fees, beneficiaries received essential learning materials, including books, pens, and other school supplies. The project also conducted close monitoring to ensure consistent attendance and strong academic performance. This comprehensive support enabled children to progress confidently in their studies.
- Ndikumana (Secondary 4): “Scoring highly at school has been possible because of the support with school fees and materials. This motivation helped me work hard and score 89%.”
- Hakizimana (Secondary 2): “Because the project continues to meet my basic needs, I am able to attend school daily. This helped me score 90% in my class.”
- Bonnette (Primary 5): “Being part of the project and receiving food, clothes, school fees, and other support motivated me to work hard, leading me to score 91%.”
Graduation and Economic Independence
A total of 19 children from Nyabunyegeri and Kamenge successfully graduated from the project in 2025:
- 14 children from Nyabunyegeri graduated after their families received start-up support for livestock rearing and crop cultivation
- 5 children from Kamenge graduated after achieving financial stability through income-generating activities
These graduations represent a significant milestone towards long-term sustainability, dignity, and self-reliance for both children and their families.
- Igirubuntu: “I am very happy that my mother received start-up support. She is now cultivating cassava, maize, and rice for sale. The income will help provide food, clothes, school fees, and other daily needs for our family.”
- Frely: “I am glad to have graduated from the project. My mother was supported with funds to invest in growing sweet potatoes and aubergines. We expect a good harvest that will improve our wellbeing.”
- Kwizera: “Over the years, I gained business skills and found local opportunities. I am now working as a bus conductor, earning income for my food, clothing, and basic needs. I am grateful that I no longer depend on the project for survival.”
Connection Through Sponsor Letters
Letter communication continued to serve as a powerful emotional bridge between children and their sponsors. These letters help children feel loved, remembered, and encouraged, strengthening their emotional wellbeing and motivation.
Testimony
- Egude: “I am always encouraged when I receive a letter from my sponsor. It brings me great joy knowing that someone cares about me.”
Conclusion
The achievements of 2025 demonstrate the powerful impact of continued partnership and compassion. Through your support, children and families in Burundi experienced improved health, increased access to education, and clear pathways towards economic independence. These outcomes reflect real and lasting change in the lives of those we serve.
We sincerely thank our donors and partners for making this progress possible. With continued support, the Comfort Burundi Project will continue restoring hope, strengthening families, and building brighter futures for vulnerable children.
