The Comfort Babies project in the Democratic Republic of Congo aims to support mums and babies who find themselves alone, marginalised, and often in extreme poverty. Living in such an unstable country, young mothers often lack the support of their families, and find themselves fighting to care for themselves and their young child/children. Our partners at Comfort Congo meet these women where they are, seeking to provide a safe space, love, comfort, and practical support. Eventually, through God’s healing power, a secure, nourishing environment, and appropriate support and training, the women graduate from the project, equipped with skills and resources to support themselves. In 2024, a number of young families graduated from the Comfort Babies Congo (CBC) project, including Judith and Abdul.

As a teenager, Judith found herself caught up in a life of prostitution due to the desperate situation of poverty and loneliness she found herself in. At 16, she found herself pregnant, and with nowhere to turn. Baby Abdul came along, and Judith, desperate, found Comfort Congo and came onto the Comfort Babies project. Five years later, she is graduating from the project, running her own business, and she and Abdul are thriving. She told her story to her sponsor, explaining where she has come from, and where she is going, thanks to the grace of God.
“Before being on the CBC project, I was a prostitute and living a bad life because I had no choice. I didn’t finish my education and as a single mother, it was difficult for me to find a job so, to provide for my child’s needs it was the only way to make money. Since I joined the CBC project, our life has been transformed positively. My child is growing and in good condition and I hope for a good future for us. Thanks to the advice, love and financial help we received via Comfort Congo and our sponsor, I decided to become a Christian and now I also have a good business that helps me to provide for our needs without doing bad things for food or clothes because the Project has helped me to restore confidence in myself, and now the people who disregarded me in my previous life respect me.”

When asked where she thinks she may be in 5 years time, Judith replied, “Honestly, I don’t know, but I know that God is the only one who knows about our future and he will do great and good things in our lives. Our future is assured thanks to the help we received from Comfort Congo and from our sponsor.”

Judith has a deep appreciation for the support she has received from her sponsor, but also for the words of love and kindness over the years. She wrote to her sponsor, “Thank you for showing us your love and supporting us when there was no one to do so. Today we are who we are because you were there during the darkest moments of our life and today we are proud to say thank you for helping us rebuild our life and we will be forever grateful for everything you have done for us. I opened a small restaurant and things are good as more customers are starting to come compared to the day I started. Thank you for helping us and giving Abdul the opportunity to grow up in good conditions. Today we are doing well and we are in good health […] We love you.”

Graduation is a really important step on the journey towards self sufficiency, but Comfort Congo will always be there for Judith and Abdul. Sponsorship has made a huge difference to Judith’s life, and has allowed her to make choices that have changed her present and her child’s future. There are around 90 individuals waiting for sponsorship on Comfort International projects, and we need people like you to commit to £30 a month to change their life. If you can, please start sponsoring today.
